Sebastian is currently studying the systematics and evolutionary ecology of holoparasitic plants, with a particular focus on the Hydnoraceae. Based at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the University of Manchester, he has broader interests in floristics, desert plant adaptations and plant conservation.

He visited Gobabeb in 2022 to study lichens and succulent plants (Aloe and Crassula) in the Namib Desert. He is now working in collaboration with Gobabeb to conserve Lithops gracilidelineata by conducting population surveys across its native range and working with NBRI to establish long-term monitoring plots.
