The Desert Science and Research Training (DeSeRT) programme, formerly known as GTRIP, will run from February through June 2013. Young Namibian scientists, guided by Gobabeb researchers, will design and implement original, independent research projects focusing on conservation and ecological restoration.

The Creator Has an Inordinate Fondness for Beetles

While the discussion continues as to whether it was Charles Darwin or JBS Haldane who made this quotable quote, the fact that there are over 300,000 species of beetles compared to less than 8,000 species of birds on earth does suggest some truth in the matter. Perhaps even more amazing is the diversity of tenebrioid beetles (tok-tokkies) of the Namib Desert when most deserts are thought to be relatively devoid of life.

YES! 2013

The second Youth Environmental Summit for environmental champions...at Gobabeb

In a little over one week, Gobabeb Research and Training Centre will host its second annual Youth Environmental Summit (YES!). From May 13th to May 18th, 30 grade 11 learners from the Erongo Region will carry out fieldwork in the beautiful Namib Desert, hear presentations from some of Namibia’s top scientists, and take part in a wide variety of activities related to pressing environmental issues.

Biodiversity Action Day

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, through its Department of Environmental Affairs in collaboration with Gobabeb Research and Training Centre, is inviting the public to participate in this year's Biodiversity Action Day.

The central topic for this year's celebration will be Biodiversity and Climate Change.

Cracking the habitat code of the critically endangered Juttadinteria albata succulent

 If you see snow white flowers in the Sendelingsdrif area, chances are good that they belong to a Juttadinteria albata plant. If so, you can call yourself fortunate, because you have seen a very rare plant species.
