Every year PhD, MSc, BTech, and other degree candidates from the SADC (Southern African Developing Community) region and all over the world and come to perform field research at Gobabeb. Gobabeb also offers local thesis supervision to selected students each year. Overall, more than 80 PhD and MSc projects have been completed at Gobabeb.
The research at Gobabeb focuses primarily on aspects of climate, ecology, geology, and geomorphology of the desert landscape. Since 1997 Gobabeb has been a SADC Centre of Excellence, facilitating the promotion of suitable lifestyles and practices through the wise management of natural resources in arid environments throughout Namibia and the entire SADC region. Some researchers, acting with the support of Gobabeb, work as much as several hundred kilometres from the actual station. Wherever you want to work in the Namib (or in some cases elsewhere in Southern Africa), Gobabeb can help you to facilitate your research.

Researchers also can be assured of the excellent support of Gobabeb staff. Two full-time research technicians as well as occasional interns are available to assist in data collection. Furthermore, there is a full-time IT assistant, and on-site maintenance specialist. Through this array of logistical support, Gobabeb hopes to offer its researchers sufficient facilities in a remote location.
