Gobabeb - About Gobabeb

Gobabeb has a first-order weather station and is responsible for taking the weather data three times a day (8am, 2pm, 8pm) and reporting it monthly to the Namibian Meteorological Service in Windhoek. These reports are particularly important for aviation traffic around Walvis Bay, as it is the only first-order weather station between Windhoek and Walvis Bay. A first-order weather station is defined by the time of day the readings are taken, the instruments present, and methods used. Weather has been recorded in Gobabeb daily since 1962, which makes the data especially valuable. Climate change is a hot topic globally and long-term data collection enhances our understanding of climate patterns and thus increases our ability to adapt to climate change.

Gobabeb also maintains an automatic weather station, which was upgraded in 2007. The weather station uses wireless state-of-the-art technology and records data to a console located in the station. It monitors barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, apparent temperature (what a human would perceive the temperature to be), rainfall, soil moisture & temperature, leaf wetness, evapotranspiration, moon phases, dew point, solar radiation, and wind speed and direction.
