Gobabeb - About Gobabeb
As a Southern African Development Community (SADC) Centre of Excellence, one of Gobabeb's major roles is to demonstrate technologies that will promote sustainable development in the SADC region. Thus, one of Gobabeb's ongoing aims is the research, development and implementation of appropriate technologies; technology developed to suit the environmental, cultural, social and economic situation of its intended users.

The DEGREE project undertaken with support from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) exemplifies this aim through the demonstration of our Hybrid Energy System. The hybrid system provides power for Gobabeb primarily through photovoltaic solar modules, which are supplemented by two diesel generators.

Other examples of appropriate technology include:

  • Promotion of solar cooking
  • Development of fog harvesting apparatuses as a means of supplementing limited water for communities in the Namib
  • Use of clay brick made from local silts
  • Recycling of water with a trickle filter for use in the research garden

In addition, Gobabeb works with the private sector to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.
