The GTRIP site visit to Langer Heinrich Uranium (PTY) LTD

On the 15th of February all GTRIP interns and mentors left Gobabeb at 05h30 on a cold and foggy morning, for an appointment at Langer Heinrich Uranium (PTY) LTD at 09h00. This proved to be quite good timing as we pulled up at the administrative block exactly on time.

We were welcomed by Linus Kamati and shown to the Zebra boardroom.

We started with the mine safety briefing. This was followed by informal introductions and some very interesting presentations about Langer Heinrich in general, their social corporate activities, radiation and the Langer Heinrich environmental policy and rehabilitation plans for the end of mining.

Following the Gobabeb promotional video, Saima gave a short talk on the goals of GTRIP and her personal experience as a GTRIP intern in 2017. Then came the turn of the GTRIP interns to introduce themselves, give some biographical information and talk about their projects. All did a good job.

We were all issued with our personal protective equipment (helmets, dust masks, ear plugs, sunglasses and safety boots) and shown around the mine. The tour was very informative. As a group we were very impressed with Langer Heinrich’s commitment to the conservation of the environment. The mine serves as an outstanding example to future development in Namibia.

We would like to thank the Langer Heinrich team, Frances Anderson, Richard Kangumba, Ian Marshman, Temwani Kayira, Linus Kamati, Gerhard Cloete and Roger Beukes for arranging the site visit and giving up their time to talk about the mine and to show us around. We would also like to thank Gobabeb Research and Training Centre for providing the transport.
