History
The Gobabeb Training and Research Center was founded in 1962. For
nearly 40 years scientific research has been carried out in the
central Namib desert at Gobabeb. Today research efforts are directed
towards understanding the interactions between the environment and
human activities and contributing to the sustainability of those
interactions.
Degreee
As
a SADC Center of excellence, Gobabeb’s role is to
illustrate technologies that will lead the SADC region in
sustainable development. Thus, one of Gobabeb’s ongoing
aims is the research, development and implementation of
appropriate technologies. The Degreee
project exemplifies this aim by displaying a Hybrid
Energy System, part of the larger Gobabeb Energy System.
Future
Gobabeb hopes that the successful demonstration of an alternative
energy system will lead to the growth and development of
similar systems throughout Namibia and SADC. In this way,
the Gobabeb aims to promote environmentally sustainable
energy use throughout the south African region.
